MEET MUFFIN, OUR ADOPTED RHINO CALF

Having grown up in Africa, I took the presence of animals for granted throughout my childhood. South Africa is known the world over as one of the best wildlife viewing destinations, and with good reason – it is a breath-taking place that is home to an amazing array of creatures.

News of rhino poaching in South Africa, and specifically KwaZulu-Natal, recently made headlines all over the world. As one of the last countries to have a significant population of wild rhinos left, South Africa became the target of international poaching syndicates and the resultant slaughter was devastating. Over 4300 rhinos were killed between 2010 and 2015, with only six of the extremely endangered Northern White Rhinos remaining to date.

MEET MUFFIN, OUR ADOPTED RHINO CALF

At JAN we have unanimously decided that it is time to start giving back to our country of origin and we have decided to do so by donating €1 on behalf of each person that walk through our doors. The proceeds of this initiative will be donated to The Rhino Orphanage and go towards taking care of Muffin, the baby rhino we have adopted. Muffin is a little White Rhino that was born in Limpopo on the same day that his mom was shot by poachers. Our monthly donation will ensure that he gets all the food, medical care, security and love he needs to grow up big and strong so he may eventually be released back into the wild.

ABOUT THE RHINO ORPHANAGE

The Rhino Orphanage is a registered NGO based in the Limpopo Province and was founded by Arrie van Deventer in 2012. It is the first dedicated, non-commercial centre that cares for orphaned and injured baby rhinos with the aim of releasing them back into the wild.

The Orphanage came into being due to a lack of specialised care of baby rhinos who have been orphaned as a consequence of the current poaching crisis. The team's aim is to create an environment where the orphaned rhinos are safe from harm and can be nurtured and cared for without any undue exposure to humans for profit or financial gain. As such The Rhino Orphanage depends on the donations of kind-hearted businesses and individuals.
